The CFR system has two layers. The base CFR credential establishes your foundational competency across research design, interview methodology, professional ethics, and contractor practice. Specializations, earned separately, document demonstrated proficiency in specific field environments and industry domains. Each suffix you earn is added to a single displayed designation.

BASE CREDENTIAL
CFR — Certified Field Researcher
The foundation of the credential system. Covers research design and method selection, conversational interview methodology, professional ethics and legal compliance, and client and contractor practice. General-purpose and domain-agnostic. Accessible to anyone with relevant professional background, regardless of whether they have conducted formal field research before.

SPECIALIZATIONS
CFR-[suffix] — Demonstrated Proficiency
Earned after the base CFR. Each suffix documents observed, practitioner-reviewed proficiency in a specific field environment or industry domain. Field environment stacks (CFR-I, CFR-C) require a completed observed component. Domain stacks (CFR-LS, CFR-CL, and others) require a domain-specific curriculum module and assessment. Stacks are accumulated over time as your practice develops.

A researcher displaying this designation has earned the base CFR credential, demonstrated proficiency in expert interviewing (CFR-I) and conference field operations (CFR-C), and completed the Life Sciences (CFR-LS) and Clinical (CFR-CL) domain modules. Each suffix was earned separately and reflects a distinct observed or assessed competency.

Research Design and Method Selection
6 hours

Qualitative and quantitative methods answer different research questions. This module covers the structural differences between conversational field research and survey-based data collection, the conditions under which each method produces superior insight, and the hybrid designs that combine both in a single engagement. Candidates complete this module with a working framework for matching method to research objective and the professional fluency to discuss that choice with clients and project managers.

Foundational Research Methods

A working command of research fundamentals is the baseline all CFR holders share. This module covers the core competencies of qualitative data collection, sampling methodology, and communicating findings, grounded in practical application rather than academic theory. Where competencies align with the MRCBOK body of knowledge, the CFR curriculum is consistent with that standard.

The core of the CFR curriculum. Conversational interview methodology is the discipline that separates a field researcher from a survey administrator. This module covers the full architecture of a professional expert interview: guide design, opening sequences, probe structure, objection handling, and close. Applicable to phone, video, and in-person interview contexts. Demonstrated proficiency in conducted interviews is documented through the CFR-I specialization.

Demonstrated proficiency in a live conference environment is documented through the CFR-C specialization.

The APFR Code of Ethics is a binding condition of the CFR credential. This module covers each principle in operational depth, the legal framework governing expert interviews in regulated industries, and the data handling obligations that apply to researchers working with personally identifiable information, confidential client material, and source identities. The goal is a researcher who can navigate hard situations correctly, not one who can recite a code.

A field researcher operating independently is running a professional practice. This module covers the client relationship, the business of contracting, and the research toolchain, including how to evaluate, adopt, and operate tools responsibly in a professional research context. Regulatory and compliance dimensions of tool use are addressed throughout, including data handling obligations introduced in Module 05.

On AI tools: AI-assisted research can meaningfully improve background preparation and post-interview synthesis. It cannot replace the expert interview itself. This module covers how to use AI tools effectively and where the line is, including the data exposure implications of entering research material, source identities, or client questions into commercial AI platforms.

Each specialization is earned after the base CFR. Field environment stacks require a completed observed component reviewed by a credentialed APFR practitioner. Domain stacks require a domain-specific curriculum module and assessment. Suffixes accumulate into a single displayed designation.

The CFR program is self-paced. Whether you are completing the curriculum between active research engagements, alongside a full-time role in another field, or as part of a planned career transition, the program is structured to progress at the pace your schedule allows.

Self-Paced Online Instruction
All six base modules are available on demand from the day you enroll. Progress through the curriculum at your own pace, in the order that fits your background. No required sessions, no expiration on enrollment, no reset between engagements.
Live Cohort Sessions
Each quarter, APFR hosts live cohort sessions for candidates in progress. Sessions cover case application, Q&A with practicing researchers, and peer discussion of field scenarios. Attendance is optional but strongly recommended for candidates who do not yet have an active field research practice to draw on.
Practitioner-Reviewed Assessments
Each module concludes with a scenario-based assessment reviewed by a credentialed APFR practitioner. Assessments are not automated. Feedback is substantive and returned within five business days. Candidates may resubmit once per module.
Practitioner-Led Instruction
Curriculum is developed and taught by active field researchers with direct experience across clinical, commercial, and institutional research contexts. The instruction reflects the work as it is actually done, not as it appears in academic research literature.
Observed Field Components
Specializations that require an observed component are coordinated with APFR staff. Observed assignments are scheduled at a pace that fits your availability. Candidates with documented prior experience in the relevant context may apply for a review waiver.
Completion Timeline
Most candidates complete the base CFR curriculum in three to six months while maintaining their existing professional schedule. Specializations are typically completed one at a time as your practice develops. There is no penalty for a slower pace and no pressure to complete on any particular timeline.

How the base CFR is earned.

The CFR designation is awarded on completion of all six modules and passing scores on all practitioner-reviewed assessments. No observed field component is required for the base credential.

Available to all registered candidates at no additional cost. No assessment. Recommended for candidates transitioning from adjacent careers — skip it if you are already working in field research and want to move directly into the curriculum.

Self-paced, available from the day you enroll. No required sequence, though the order above is recommended for candidates newer to field research methodology.

Pass practitioner-reviewed module assessments
Each module concludes with a scenario-based assessment. Reviewed by a credentialed APFR practitioner with substantive feedback. Candidates may resubmit once per module.

CFR credential awarded
Upon satisfactory completion, the CFR designation is issued. You receive a credential certificate, your name is listed in the APFR member directory, and you are eligible for APFR placement referrals and specialization enrollment.
ANNUAL RENEWAL
The CFR credential is maintained annually.
Annual renewal confirms that the credential holder remains active, in good standing under the Code of Ethics, and current with continuing education requirements. A credential that cannot be renewed is a credential that cannot be trusted.

CFR and MRCBOK are complementary, not competing.

The MRCBOK (Market Research Core Body of Knowledge) provides foundational competency in research design and data collection methods. The CFR credential covers the qualitative field methodology and operational practice that MRCBOK does not address. Together, they represent the most complete professional credential available for a working field researcher.

Candidates holding a current MRCBOK certification may apply for a prior learning review against the CFR Foundational Research Methods module. The dual-credential path costs approximately $2,500 to $3,000 and can typically be completed within a year of active progress.
